The Socialist Group in the European Parliament has requested that the European Commission make a statement to Parliament during the next Strasbourg plenary, "with a view to setting in train immediately the available mechanisms of European solidarity in order to lessen the impact of the storm which struck a few days ago."
Given the severe damage – not just economic and environmental, but above all in terms of the loss of human life – Socialist MEPs will be asking the Commission to mobilise Community assistance scheduled for this type of natural disaster as quickly as possible.
The storm’s passage was particularly devastating in the autonomous community of Catalonia, where the collapse of a sports hall, after its roof had been ripped off by the wind, claimed the lives of four children in the district of Sant Boi de Llobregat.
Catalan MEP Maria Badia, one of the main sponsors of the parliamentary initiative, has expressed her Group’s solidarity with the victims of this tragedy. "In Catalonia, as in so many other locations around southern Europe, we have experienced a truly painful situation involving something that is totally irretrievable: the loss of human life."
"However, we have asked for the Commission to make a statement to Parliament, because our regions need a rapid response from the European Union and solidarity funds to be released that will help us alleviate the material damage caused by this major disaster," explained Maria Badia.
