Europe requires a new political engagement in order to rise successfully to the social, environmental, financial and employment challenges it faces. We therefore expect the candidate for the job of President of the European Commission to produce an action programme that reflects these goals, indicated the leader of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats, Martin Schulz, at a press conference in Strasbourg on 14 July 2009.
We want candidate Barroso to give serious consideration to our political priorities for a Europe that is more social, more just, more supportive and more democratic. The vote cast by our Group for the appointment of the new President of the European Commission will hinge on candidate Barroso’s action programme and commitment with regard to the true needs of Europe and its citizens, stressed Mr Schulz.
The matter of appointing the President of the European Commission does not feature on the European Parliament’s July agenda, indicated Schulz. This marks a success for our Group, because Socialists & Democrats had rightly been warning that this appointment, from both the political as well as technical standpoints, could not be done and dusted this month.
Martin Schulz also made a point of stressing his doubts about the current political conduct of Mr Barroso, whom he described as partisan – towards the EPP – and opportunist. This is not a style in keeping with the image of a European Commission president, maintained Martin Schulz.
